- What is the monthly "bugspray fee"?
During the warmer months, twice a day, we spray our students with Avon brand, "SKIN SO SOFT BUG GUARD PLUS SPF 15 Sunscreen Spray" (it is an all natural insect repellant that is Hypo-allergenic. DEET-free; PABA-free.) to protect them from mosquito bites and possible viruses/disease such as West Nile virus or Encephalitis.
We only charge your account when we need to. For example, typically we do not need to use repellant in the months of November, December, January, February or March; therefore, you will not be billed.
Please understand we are not taking responsiblity for any bug bites your child may receive, we are just trying to do what we can to prevent it.
- Can I bring my own insect repellant to avoid the charge?
We ask that to keep things simple for you and for our staff you allow us to just have one spray bottle for everyone; however, if you find your child is “extra sweet” and the Avon Skin So Soft is just not working for him/her then by all means bring in your own!
Our top priority is your child’s well being.

You are always welcome; however, we do ask that you be sneaky about it so that your child does not see you and become confused and/or upset thinking they are going home. Sometimes you will need to coordinate with the office for some “sneaky” help to the windows.
During high traffic times like drop off and pick up times, we ask that to reduce traffic through the “kids zones” and to ensure safety, you allow our staff to help your child get to where he/she needs to be.
If you said to any staff member that you were going to observe or speak to a teacher, etc. No one would ever deny you access.
No, because the curriculum that we use is not of the choices that the State of Florida has approved for VPK, and we love our curriculum! For more than 23 years now our K-4 program has not just focused on “Reading readiness” but actual phonetic based reading. We would never compromise the high quality and exceptional standards that our history in academics has proven just to receive “free government dollars”.
Ms. Cottam and Mrs. Heiselman have been on staff since 1990. Mrs. Foxx, Mrs. Poole and Ms. Beauchamp have been on staff for more than 9 years. The rest of our teaching staff have been with us for more than 3 years. We spend more time with each other than we do our families.
This is what really makes our school seem like a home away from home, for us and our students! The only draw back to our longevity is having second generation students attending OACS which makes it very difficult for us to live in denial about our own ages. :)
Most preschools and daycare centers will charge you weekly whether you’re in attendance or not year round. We don’t do that because we hope that parents and grandparents can spend quality time with their children during the summer months and create treasured memories without being monetarily penalized!
Also a large percentage of our clients are teachers that have the summers off and we want them to have the extra money to make those memories happen! Since so many of our students do not attend during summer break, we are not fully staffed and do not have to pay our teachers for that time.
Conversely, during the school year our teachers are committed to their classes whether your child is in attendance or not, so we are always fully staffed during school months. And have to generate the funds to pay our employees accordingly.
You are welcome to help out! We will put you right to work! But first you have to have the same background checks that our staff has, so you will need to speak with Ms. Cottam or Mrs. Heiselman to get that in order before we can allow you direct contact with anyone’s child but your own.
